Saturday 7/3/10
We started off our excursion by going to a park area that had a few 100 year old houses, an old shop, and an old theatre. The grounds were full of hydrangas, lilies, palms and other flowers and trees. Evidently the houses and the shop and theatre had been moved there intact. We saw how silk was spun and palm mats were woven 100 years ago. We also saw a rice paddy and learned how the Japanese ground the rice and made it ready to eat. There were many palms decorated for an upcoming holiday on July 7th. The decorations were mostly colored paper chains. After that we went off to the Lake area. We visited two different lakes, the first one was the "lake of many colors" and I do not know the name of the second one. Both were in resort areas, about an hour outside of Fukushima. The first one had all the koi fish that are pictured here, the second one we had a boat ride on. Evidently in the winter time people use snow mobiles to go out on the lake and ice fish for black bass and other fish. We saw several people fishing. We ate soba noodles and tempura for lunch at the first place and ice cream at the second place. Then we went to Dr. Hideyo Noguchi's Memorial Hall. He is known for his work in researching Yellow Fever in Brazil and Ghana. He was a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania and later at the Rockefeller Medican Rearch Center. He was born in 1876 and died of yellow fever in 1928 in Ghana. His picture is featured on the 1000 yen note. Before heading back we stopped at the "House of Glass" or "World of Glass", not sure which it was called, which was a hugh store that sold lots of glasswork, obviously. The had a glassblower doing his craft and all sorts of beautiful pieces of glass art work, plus glasses of all shapes and sizes for drinking, plus lots of different kinds of jewelry. Unfortunately we did not have much time to shop, but it was fun to look at all of the lovely pieces.
